CROWNS

Porcelain Crowns: Strengthen and Protect Your Damaged Tooth

When a tooth is compromised by root canal therapy, grinding, decay, or fracture, it can become weak and prone to breakage. A porcelain crown, prescribed by your dentist, offers 360-degree coverage and reinforces the tooth, protecting it from daily wear and tear. Thanks to advancements in dental technology, porcelain crowns are now a leading choice for restoring damaged teeth, providing both strength and a natural-looking appearance.

Benefits of Porcelain Crowns

A crown is a full-coverage restoration that covers a vulnerable tooth—one that’s too damaged to support a traditional filling. Once placed, it can:

  • Strengthen a Heavily Restored Tooth: Prevent future fractures in teeth that have undergone multiple restorations.

  • Restore Lost Tooth Structure: Protect teeth worn down by grinding.

  • Enhance Appearance: Improve the aesthetic look of a damaged tooth.

  • Relieve Pain: Alleviate discomfort caused by cracks or fractures.

What to Expect During the Crown Process

First Appointment

1. Preparation and Local Anesthesia
At your initial visit to Gelinas Dental Studio in Toronto, we’ll provide local anesthesia to numb the affected tooth. The dentist then prepares the tooth by removing a minimal amount of structure to make space for the porcelain crown.

2. Impressions and Temporary Crown
After confirming the final shape and contour, we take a 3D scan or impression of the prepared tooth. This information is sent to our lab ceramist, who will craft a natural-looking porcelain crown. In the meantime, we create a temporary crown to protect against sensitivity and prevent the gums from growing over the tooth’s margins.

3. Care for Your Temporary Crown
For about two weeks, avoid sticky foods that might loosen the temporary crown. If it does dislodge, gently press it back in place and contact our studio if you need assistance.

Second Appointment

1. Removing the Temporary Crown
When you return, we’ll remove the temporary crown and fit the custom porcelain crown in its place.

2. Fitting and Cementation
We take an X-ray to confirm the crown’s fit and appearance. Next, a bonding agent is applied to your prepared tooth, and the crown is secured with a specialized cement. Any excess is cleaned away, leaving you with a fully restored, comfortable tooth.

3. Post-Procedure Care
Finally, our team will provide detailed instructions on caring for your new crown, including brushing, flossing, and regular checkups to ensure it lasts for many years to come.
