A Q&A With Dr. Andrea Gelinas

Dr. Andrea Gelinas in her West Toronto dental clinic, Gelinas Dental Studio. “Toronto is such a vibrant city, and I want my Studio to reflect that.”

When did you first become interested in dentistry?

I’ve wanted to be a dentist since I was my son’s age – six/seven. My mom was afraid of going to the dentist, and she would bring me to her appointments. I was very curious about everything happening during the visit. I was fascinated! Now that I’m a dentist myself, I remember and am so impressed by how my mom’s dentist diffused the situation and made her less anxious.

I had no back-up plan – studying dentistry was all I wanted to do. I enjoy a challenge!

Why did you decide to open your practice in Toronto's west end?

I have always loved that area of the city; the vibe really resonates with me. And it’s the part of Toronto that reminds me the most of New York City – it has great small businesses, art galleries, restaurants, bars, and a bit of grit.

How did you approach designing the Studio space?

Every detail was from the vantage point of the patient experience. When someone walks in the door to the Studio, I wanted them to feel like they were checking into a boutique hotel. Having water and coffee available, and art to look at, elevates the experience and makes it feel personal. And the many plants we have bring the space to life.

There’s an element of surprise for our new patients – “Wait, this is a dental office?” And it is clear right away that this is a unique experience; and hopefully this communicates that we go above and beyond here.

Why is art so integral to the Studio's environment?

It gives me a chance to inject personality into the space. I want people to feel seen when they come in, and I really believe in supporting local artists. They are the key cultural figures of our city.

What are some of your go-to spots to see art in Toronto?

I love popping over to Christopher Cutts, which is just around the corner from Gelinas Dental Studio, and I love Cooper Cole, Bau-Xi Gallery, and Patel Brown. They are all quite close to one another too. And I always make time to attend Toronto art events like Artist Project and Art Toronto!
